Autogenous Vaccines
What is a Custom Vaccine?
Custom, or autogenous, vaccines are created to address specific disease management needs, for a specific operation, location or area, that are not being met by commercial vaccines.
A CUSTOM VACCINE IS:
- Regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Center for Veterinary Biologics
- Produced according to an approved Outline of Production (9 CFR 113:113)
- Approved only for use by or under the direction of a licensed veterinarian
What is the Expiration for a Custom Vaccine?
Common bacteria and viruses that can be addressed by the use of custom vaccines:
- The particular isolate expires 12 months from harvest of first serial (can be extended to 60 months with permission from CVB), or 15 months from date of isolation, whichever comes first
- All autogenous products have an 18-month expiration date from the harvest date of the first-grown antigen in the serial of the vaccine.
